TORCH CLUB of Frederick Maryland

Dedicated to the cultural interchange of knowledge among the professions

Welcome to Torch Club of Frederick

"Torch Club offers its members a place where active minds can become even more active." - Norris Paxton

Torch Club of Frederick Maryland hosts monthly dinner meetings at which respected professionals engage in invigorating discussion, listen to insightful presentations, and deepen their understanding of the world around us. If you enjoy talking and listening, and are naturally inquisitive, you will enjoy a Torch Club experience.

At Torch Club, there is no championing of causes, no fund-raising or outside obligations of any kind. Instead, we are focused on fellowship and talk -- the best kind of talk.

A Torch evening begins at 6 p.m. with Social Hour (cash bar), continues with a buffet dinner, and then is capped by a thought-provoking presentation by a member. Topics span the spectrum: The decline of print newspapers, the rise of generation Y, the life and times of Claude Monet, social responsibility among the rich and powerful, the legacy of U.S. President John Hanson, the shaping of scientific discovery by genius and chance, and fascinating insights into major and little-remembered figures in world history. A lively Q&A session follows. We adjourn at 9 p.m. sharp.

Who: Torch Club is open to all professions, including current and retired educators, engineers and scientists, medical professionals, entrepreneurs, policy wonks, journalists, administrators, artists, attorneys, and more.

What: More than 3,000 Torch members in 80 local clubs are found under the North American umbrella of Torch Club International.

When: From 6 to 9 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month, September through May.

Where: Ceresville Mansion, 8529 Liberty Rd, in northern Frederick. (For directions, see MapQuest below.)

History and Publications

HISTORY: The nation's first Torch Club was inaugurated in Minneapolis in 1924 as a fellowship "of the learned professions." As new professions emerged, Torch Club expanded to include "members from other disciplines pursued by a person in a recognized professional manner." Today, Torch Clubs are part of the International Association of Torch Clubs, a non-profit corporation that provides common services to member organizations.

New Book by Torch Club Gold Medal Recipient George DuBois

Torch Club of Frederick proudly announces publication of "Cross Class Alliances and the Birth of Modern Liberalism," by Torch Club of Frederick Gold Member, George Du Bois, Jr.

This hard-cover labor history illustrates by the example of Maryland the political role workers throughout the nation played in the birth of modern liberalism. Throughout, Du Bois emphasizes narrative over theoretical discussions. "I wanted the book to appeal to union members interested in their own history and to the general public interested in learning how modern politics were shaped long ago," he says. "I also wanted to give my readers the flavor of the age. The late 19th and early 20th ceturies were interesting and formative years."

Says Richard Schneirov of Indiana State UniversityREVIEW: "Cross Class Alliances and the Birth of Modern Liberalism is a well researched, insightful contribution to our understanding of organized labor's relation to Progressive reform. Acting as social liberals Maryland workers forged alliances across class lines to win reforms such as the secret ballot, health and safety and anti-sweatshop legislation, and workmen's compensation. By the end of this important work, Du Bois convincingly demonstrates that Maryland's organized workers were a key force in the forging of modern liberal politics."

About Ceresville Mansion

The Torch Club of Frederick meets at Ceresville Mansion, in northern Frederick.

Located on 25 riverside acres with stunning mountain views, Ceresville Mansion offers a Grand Ballroom that seats 200 guests, and features high ceilings, double parlors, garden terrace with reflecting pool, outdoor pergola--and ample free parking.

Built in 1888, the mansion was once part of a massive land grant known as Dulaney's Lot, which in 1724 was surveyed and divided into parcels. In the 1780s, General Otho Williams acquired the Ceresville tract, as reparation for service during the American Revolutionary War. General Williams constructed the Ceresville grist mill, the original Mansion house and a saw mill...
